THE CHRONICLE HERALD
HALIFAX
MOLLY JOHNSON @ HALIFAX JAZZ FESTIVAL
fans spread out on three sides of the tent as Molly Johnson came on for the sold-out main event. The Toronto singer came to prove to us that swing, melody, great lyrics and personality are not dead.
The word was out that Molly J was in tune. Was she ever.
Wow, Halifax, she said by way of greeting. The crowd responded with an excited shout and applause. Molly is special. She’s unbelievably fine. And she’s one of us.
The way she sings the swing songbooks is not a historical recreation, not period music. She puts on her own stamp, signature, her personal musical DNA with a hint of Ella as she sings But Not for Me. Big uproar. Wow, Halifax, said she.
Her band is a real swing band, with piano, bass, drums and soprano sax or flute. Their ease and colourful, listenable playing at comfortable volumes is a great pleasure to listen to. With her singing, who could ask for anything more? We all love rhythm, right?
She talks to the audience as though the fans are her best friends — easy, informal and with a lightning-quick wit, the opposite of a prepared script.
Whatever Lola Wants, she sang, and made it cheeky. She puts a hundred girls and women into her delivery — smoky, sensual, petulant, the little girl, the mature woman, quick on the uptake and no fool.
Funny, she said, I think the Depression only hit people with money to lose. A great line.
But when she sings In My Solitude, it’s mellow and reflective, and when she sings I Loves You Porgy, it’s radiant with the pain of true love and its awareness of how fragile it is and how dangerous to love someone that way.
Molly J came to town and we would really like to keep her.
